Rehoming an Animal Is Never Easy
We understand that making the decision to rehome a pet can be incredibly difficult. Sometimes circumstances change and, despite your best efforts, you may no longer be able to provide the care your animal needs.
Because we are a small rural shelter and often operate at capacity, we may not always be able to take an animal immediately. When we don't have an available kennel, we maintain an intake waiting list and work to bring animals into our care as space becomes available.
If you are considering rehoming your animal, please take the following steps as soon as you know you need help. The sooner you reach out, the more options we may be able to help
1. Complete Our Surrender Inquiry
Start by completing our Surrender Inquiry (see below for links). This gives us important information about your animal, your situation, and the type of help you need. It also allows us to place your animal on our intake waiting list if surrender to PCHS is the appropriate option.
While we would love to help every animal right away, our available space changes frequently. We are continually working to find homes for the animals already in our care so we can make room for others who need help.
Please do not abandon or leave an animal outside our shelter. If you are facing an urgent situation, contact us so we can discuss available options.
2. If Food Costs Are the Problem, We May Be Able to Help
If you are considering rehoming your pet because you are struggling to afford food, please reach out to us before making the decision to surrender.
Our Arlo's Pet Pantry provides free dog and cat food to eligible Pope County residents experiencing food insecurity. Our goal is to help keep pets and their families together whenever possible.
Sometimes a little support can make the difference between a family having to surrender a pet and being able to keep them safely at home.
3. Reach Out to Other Shelters & Rescues
PCHS is not the only resource available. You may be able to find help or an available kennel sooner through another shelter or rescue organization.
Visit our Surrounding Area Rescues page for a list of organizations you can contact. We encourage you to reach out to several organizations, as availability and intake policies vary.
4. Create an Adopt-a-Pet Rehome Profile
If your pet is safe to remain in your home while you search for a new family, creating a Rehome profile through Adopt-a-Pet.com can be a great option (see below for instructions).
Your pet can be seen by people actively looking to adopt, giving you the opportunity to help find a new home directly. Rehome profiles may also be featured on our PCHS Adopt page, helping your pet reach an even larger audience.
5. Share With Your Community
Your own network can be one of the best resources for finding the right home.
Consider sharing your pet on:
- Your personal social media pages
- Local community Facebook groups
- Neighborhood groups
- Local newspapers or community boards
- Friends, family, coworkers, and other people you trust
Be honest about your pet's personality, needs, age, behavior, and medical history. Finding the right home is more important than finding the fastest home.
We're Here to Help
Please do not leave an animal outside our shelter, at a veterinary clinic, or at another facility. Abandoning an animal puts them at risk and may prevent us from getting important information about their health, behavior, and history.
If surrender is ultimately necessary, completing the steps above gives us the best opportunity to help you and your pet.

3. Review Applications
The dedicated team at Rehome will give you all the help you need to select the best potential adopters.
4. Meet Adopters
The Rehome team will guide you through the process of setting safe and pressure-free meetings with applicants.
5. Finalize Adoption
Rehome will provide you with a template for transfer of ownership with your adopter!
